The AU Advocacy and External Engagement Graduate Intern will offer support in areas such as administration, research, planning, note-taking, and policy analysis.

The role is in line with the African Union Liaison Office Partnership Strategy and aligns with the goals of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the AU.

Position 1: Technical Lead/WASH/  

Required Education, Training, License, Registration, and/or Certification  
• A master's degree in a relevant technical field (e.g., public health, education, agriculture, social work, or international development).

Required Professional Experience  
• Minimum of 7 years of experience in technical leadership roles within international development or humanitarian contexts.

• Proven experience in securing resources and engaging with donors, with a history of leading technical input for large, competitive proposals.

• Demonstrated expertise in:  
• Developing technical strategies  
• Ensuring program quality and implementing evidence-based programming  
• Promoting innovation and adaptive management  
• Supporting localisation and strengthening systems  
• Strong external representation and negotiation skills with donors, governments, and global networks.

• Excellent leadership, people management, and communication skills  
• Deep understanding of Ethiopian policies, strategies, and legal requirements.

• Strong interpersonal and leadership skills, with the ability to inspire and manage diverse teams.

• Strong report writing, analytical, and presentation skills in English.

• The position is based in Addis Ababa or the project location, with frequent travel to field offices and project sites.

• Regular interaction with donors, government bodies, UN agencies, and international non-governmental organization (INGO) consortia.

• Field conditions may involve difficult terrains, limited infrastructure, and security-sensitive areas.

• Extended working hours may be necessary during donor submissions, evaluations, or emergency responses.

• The role demands strong representation, negotiation, and relationship-building skills in various settings.

• Proven track record in securing and managing large-scale donor funding from bilateral, multilateral, foundation, corporate, and private donors.

• Demonstrated success in collaborating with Resource Acquisition and Management (RAM) teams to design and win complex, multi-sectoral proposals.

• Experience representing the organization at high-level donor forums, technical working groups, and multi-stakeholder platforms.

• Previous leadership experience in technical teams across multiple sectors (Health & Nutrition, WASH, Education, Livelihoods, Child Protection, Gender, Climate/Environment, Faith, and Development).

• Experience working in fragile, conflict-affected, or complex humanitarian-development environments.

• Strong understanding of donor priorities and funding mechanisms (USAID/BHA, FCDO, EU, UN agencies, World Bank, GAC, foundations, corporates).

• In-depth knowledge of program quality standards, evidence-based approaches, and innovation in development and humanitarian programming.

• Familiarity with localization frameworks, partnership models, and systems-strengthening approaches.

• Applied knowledge of cross-cutting themes: gender equality, safeguarding, conflict sensitivity, faith and development, do no harm, social inclusion, and climate resilience.

• Solid foundation in monitoring, evaluation, accountability, and learning (MEAL) and its application in resource acquisition and adaptive management.

Position 2: Senior Gender Advisor  
Required Education, Training, License, Registration, and/or Certification  
• A university degree, at least a master's (M.Sc.), in gender-related fields.

• Training and in-depth knowledge in gender issues.

• Training in producing publications and developing stories.

Required Professional Experience  
• At least 7 years of experience in reducing environmental shocks, improving livelihoods, and innovatively empowering rural women and girls.

• Must have a deep understanding of the RESILIENT WE project.

• Must have a clear understanding of the priorities, requirements, and standards of major donors.

• Must possess proven analytical and problem-solving abilities.

• Familiarity with standard gender analysis frameworks is an advantage.

• Proven research experience in gender and rural development.

• Excellent communication skills.

• Strong interpersonal and leadership skills, with the ability to work with diverse teams.

• Strong report writing, analytical, and presentation skills in English.

• Based in Addis Ababa HO, with 20% travel to project sites.

• Regular interaction with WFP, partner NGOs, the private sector, and government bodies.

• Extended working hours may be required during report submissions and as needed.

Preferred Experience, Knowledge, and/or Key Competencies  
• We prefer to fill this position with external staff rather than WVIE internal staff since the RESILIENT WE project is in its final year and has nine months remaining, ending March 31, 2027.
Bringing internal staff would not be beneficial at this stage.
• Excellent interpersonal skills – building good relationships with internal and external stakeholders and maintaining effective collaboration with all staff members.

• If possible, experience with gender-transformative development projects or programs by WV.

• Excellent skill in producing quality and timely reports.

• Appropriate skills and experience in gender-based capacity building and training for staff and partners.

• Rich experience in facilitating productive meetings, effective communication, and strong knowledge of both oral and written English.
