The British Office Khartoum is seeking an particular Assistant to support the work of the elderly Leadership Team HM Ambassador (HMA), Deputy Head of Mission( DHM), and Development Director. This is a busy position and vital to the smooth and effective operation of the new British Office Sudan( BOS).  The successful candidate will need to build effective relationships with the offices of  elderly Sudanese figures in Sudan and the region, as well as work  nearly with colleagues in Nairobi and Addis Ababa. The PA also plays a  pivotal role in internal coordination within the British Office. S/ he will need resilience and common sense, be visionary and suitable to use their initiative and judgement and have strong organisational skills. Skills in Arabic will be helpful. A new Ambassador, Richard Crowder, will also arrive in September 2024.

Job Description (Roles and Responsibilities)  

Main purpose of job  You'll work with the Country Director as an integral part of the British Embassy economic team in Addis in pursuit of the objectives set out in UK Department for Business and Trade’s (DBT) Regional Trade Plan for Africa and the Embassy’s Country Plan. As Deputy Country Director, you'll provide leadership to the team’s marketable work, building and managing the pipeline of projects, advising UK investors and exporters to help them realise their ambitions, leading ambitious awareness-  structure campaigns among UK businesses in priority sectors, holding  crucial relationships within the Government of Ethiopia and supporting UK companies already in the market to continue to operate successfully. In addition to this, you'll work closely with the Trade Policy and Market Access lead to support the work of the wider DBT- Ethiopia  platoon and have responsibility for the day- to- day functional management of the  marketable team and will deputise for the Country Director as required. 

Environment  Bilateral trade between UK and Ethiopia was worth£ 546m in the four quarters to the end of Q1 2024. The UK has investments in major sector including telecoms, financial services and mining, and has a close development partnership focused on  profitable reform. DBT in Ethiopia is based at the British Embassy in Addis Ababa. We're a core part of a wider economy focused team alongside the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), working to alleviate poverty, improve  profitable development and enhance trade and investment between the UK and Ethiopia.Priority sectors of focus for the team’s work include infrastructure, agribusiness, healthcare and renewable energy.  

Roles and responsibilities  

This is a leadership role where the primary objective is to encourage private sector led growth, by  guarding and promoting investment and leveraging the strengths of British businesses. You'll provide leadership to the  marketable team to unlock  profitable growth and job creation by unblocking flagship investor issues and bringing private sector investment to Africa. You'll work in support of Ethiopia and the UK’s growth agenda and report to the Country Director. As a believable interlocutor with businesses who understands how companies make  opinions, using that knowledge to guide the Embassy’s work, your  part will have a number of objectives 

Establish a world- class marketable support unit You'll facilitate the development of a pipeline of UK investment and export deals in Ethiopia, and will be responsible for devising and executing strategies to drive this pipeline forward, reporting to the Country Director and  participating insights with the wider embassy team. You'll map  crucial UK investors’ presence in Ethiopia and manage  crucial investor relationships, facilitate their dialogue with the Ethiopian authorities and controllers to expedite resolution of challenges to more mutually  salutary investments, uniting with the Trade Policy and Market Access lead to overcome business environment challenges. You'll line manage a small team including one investment and one trade advisor, ensuring that they've clear objectives and activities in place to support those objectives. As the successful candidate, you'll be a dynamic leader with good communication skills,  suitable to motivate the trade and investment team and prosperity colleagues and engage credibly with senior people in order to represent interests of the DBT Ethiopia team and its people. You'll be good at thinking strategically and planning for the future. You'll be suitable to demonstrate the management capability to support a high performing, flexible and  nimble team; and have a proven ability to build good relationships with stakeholders and clients. You'll also be comfortable drilling down into the detail to manage the performance.

You may be required to work up to 4- 5 evenings each month, where business networking events require attendance. 

You may be expected to travel to other  metropolises in Ethiopia( within UK travel advice), and there may be  openings for occasional travel to the UK, and possibly other countries within Africa – in recent years this has been 2- 3 trips a year.  

Essential qualifications, skills and experience 

Postgraduate degree and/ or undergraduate degree and other applicable professional qualification. 

Applicable professional work experience in the private sector, or within a private sector orientated part of Government or International Organisation. 

Experience of working in or with government departments, NGOs, and  analogous institutions. 

Proven track record of leadership as well ascross-team collaboration. 

Proven  customer- facing experience, for example with an investment promotion agency or professional services firm. 

Fluency in the language of business and investment. 

A positive,  flexible, flexible and adaptable “ can- do ” attitude that can see way through challenges. 

Strong interpersonal and leadership skills, ability to work successfully in multilateral brigades and across boundaries, to build networks across the region. 

Excellent drafting skills.  

Desirable qualifications, skills and experience 

Experience of the following business development, understanding issues and developing and pursuing strategies together, investment appraisal, deal pipeline preparation, deal brokering, advisory. 

Knowledge of the UK and Ethiopian profitable and business environment. 

Experience in managing budgets. 

Knowledge of the investment services contract and delivery mechanisms. 

Knowledge/ experience of transnational development, or a willingness to learn. 

Language Amharic.
